Well guys… after a lovely 2-year run on WordPress, it’s time to find the blog a new home. No offense wordpress, but we’ve moved to tumblr so we can use a sleek new template with more color and BIGGER pictures! It ties in much better to our main site as well. An exciting post for the following reason… it’s the first shoot to be done (partially) in the new studio!! Much thanks to senior Hilary and her mom Kathryn for looking past the clutter of the not quite ready studio-in-progress and seeing the ‘cool’ beneath.

All shots in this post are either in or near the new location. Want to see it yourself?? Then be sure to turn up for next week’s downtown Joplin art walk on the 16th and come on around to the back of 509 s main (west side of the health solutions/hacket’s hott wings building) and follow the signs for the official studio opening! Fun events for the evening will be announced soon… in the meanwhile enjoy the first of a new season of senior pictures!

With a recent vacation and all the craziness I’ve had getting a studio space fixed up (I haven’t mentioned that on here yet, have I?), I haven’t had as much time lately as I’d like for actual photo shoots- pretty ironic I suppose. Last night’s engagement session got my creative juices flowing again though, as I was inspired by this very easygoing couple as my subjects and I had the absolute perfect time of day to work with, lighting wise.

Lighting was really my focus here even more than usual- I did some playing around for an extra ‘dramatic’ feel with a sparing use of light. I was pretty happy with the results. Ok, super happy, actually. But if you don’t like it, you can sure tell me.

Jenna and Kris, our lovely couple, become a couple in April and plan to marry in October. I told them they beat my wife and I’s meet-to-marry timeline (we met in April and married in December 6 years ago). That’s pretty impressive, seeing how fast we moved. But when you’re in love, might was well get things rolling, eh?

Limner exhibit

So I’m a little late posting these considering the show was nearly a week ago, but better late than never, right? Pictured below are the 3 photographs I had the honor of displaying in the Limner Society opening exhibit here in Joplin for the 3D Thursday art walk.

Who are the Limner society? They are a group of Christian artists who travel from city to city (generally much larger cities, mind you), setting up a space in each city for a 1-2 week period and creating art for nearly that entire duration in collaboration with local artists. These guys (and girls) know their stuff and also enjoy challenging the idea of ‘christian art’; by creating meaningful, modern, artistically professional work that is from a Christian perspective without being strictly- well, what most people think of when they think of ‘christian art’. You can find out more here.

One of my favorite things about this project is it got me out shooting something for the fun of it, which I really needed. And my mini-series of artists as superheroes (featuring a couple of my fellow artists who also had displays in the exhibit) was SO fun to take that I’m not stopping it here.

So consider this post an open call; if you are an artist or know of an artist that would be interested in being in this series (cape and all), I would LOVE to hear from you. Now stay posted for more announcements in this vein….

Baby Laila, session 2

How do you get the baby to look at the camera? Here’s trick #1. the finger snap. Parents typically expect you to take the picture after their hands are back to their original position, however. (that’s a note to self).

Baby Laila is back! ‘Nuff said… just look how ridiculously cute this kid is.

This was a wedding made up of many great little moments; laughing, crying, and huge love. And honestly the best wedding performance I’ve probably ever heard- the groom’s heartfelt and surprising version of ‘can’t help falling in love’ might also double as the best elvis impression ever- and all this is not to mention some of the funkiest dancing that I’ve seen take place at a reception. Sarah & Aaron: waiting for Olivia

I drove up to Springfield yesterday to meet Sarah & Aaron, and quickly discovered they’re one of those couples I feel like I’ve already known forever. We certainly know enough of the same people… Sarah is friends with Nikki & Ryan whose wedding I shot this spring, as well as Betsy & Levi, whose beautiful baby I took pictures of a few months ago and will be taking pictures of again this coming week.

This down to earth (and very funny) couple have been preparing like mad for little Olivia- check out the awesome nursery- and they, as well as me, are also very excited about the baby’s 1st year plan that Olivia will be a part of. Tune in for more pictures in September with the new addition!

Bennett at play

Meet Bennett. While some might say that 18 months is hard age to get good pictures of, things flowed pretty easily for me during this shoot… and that probably has something to do with me having a son the exact same age at home. I certainly get my exercise on photo shoots like this one, but it’s all well worth it.

Bennett is one sharp little guy. We hung out at his grandparents house where there is an abundance of tractors and mowers, two things that Bennett absolutely LOVES… not to mention a couple little trucks of his own.
