Stepping into a fairytale

…a story no-one else can duplicate…

9art photography, concept & lifestyle photographer, joplin mo- fairytale sessions3

The fairy tale series custom caters stories in words and photographs around the personality of your child. We create exclusive experiences that set the foundation for a story that no one else can duplicate.

It is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between 9art photography and author Lancelot Schaubert.

I’ve been waiting to talk about this idea for months… so, so excited to be able to announce it.

As long as I’ve been a photographer (a ‘ whoa, I get paid to do this’ photographer), I’ve been trying to figure out how to create new things. How to make something beautiful with my work. Inspired by the creator who instilled creativity in my very being, I want to innovate and weave imagery that inspires emotion and delight.

I cannot, and will not, settle for being ‘just another photographer.’ Of course, I’ve got a long way to go still and decades of learning ahead when it comes to improving my craft and forming something meaningful… but I’m giving it my best shot, every step of the way.

So far, I’ve had two separate categories of work, both of which I enjoy tremendously; the images I create for paying clients (family pictures and the like), and the images  I create simply to be creative, to make something as close to ‘art’ as I can manage.

The time has come to fuse the two together. My dream is to produce work that is (subjectively) gallery worthy, yet also something clients can be a part of. The limited edition fairy tale series will accomplish that, and I would LOVE to invite you to collaborate with me.

What IS it?

It is exactly what I stated at the beginning… a series that custom caters stories in words and photographs around the personality of your child. We do that by meeting with you, finding out about your child and what makes them unique. We take those details and plug them into a unique story and a beautiful photo shoot.

The images:

Each shoot will be part of the same general ‘series’ but will also have completely its’ own themes and feel. Each set of images will feel like a fairy tale… but rather than basing the shoot on an already existing fairytale, we are creating a BRAND NEW fairy tale.

In the first session with little Adara, for instance, we knew that she loves  dressing up like heroes from ages past, and ADORES books. I created a set of images based on those facts.

The images created for each shoot will be surreal and mystical, with hints of things that can only be explained by the words that accompany them…

The words:

Some of you may know my friend Lance Schaubert’s work from my past collaborations from him, from his copywriting for organizations such as the Joplin CVB, or from his blog that features articles, poetry, and interviews. Where Lance shines most, though, is telling a story. After reading a story he’d written about my own child and then working together on an e-book– I knew we needed to do a project like this.

Lance has an ability to weave a tale that will fill you with wonder, make you laugh, and help you remember what it’s like to be a kid again. With the poem or story that accompanies your session, he’ll do just that, and most importantly, help your child feel special.

Imagine the delight of a kid, to see that there is a new story, about THEM, that feels like a wonderful old fairy tale.

The packages:

Since this is a brand new concept, we had to think carefully about how to present the images and text. We decided there would just be two packages.

These packages start at a higher level than our traditional offerings, but we think it’s worth it for the full experience, products you will receive, and level of artistry that we will strive to infuse the series with. The items presented in the package are simple but beautiful. If you’d like to see samples of our extremely high quality, lay-flat photo books or our aluminum metal wall portraits, I’d love to show you in person.

The poem included with package 1 will be a 1 page offering: the story is longer and more in depth, perfect for fusing with the images in a full picture book.

PACKAGE 1 ($1350)

customized, on location fairytale session, starring your child

customized poem featuring a story that features your child

20″ x 50″ aluminum wall portrait (w/ poem included in display)

PACKAGE 2 ($2500)

customized, on location fairytale session, starring your child

customized, full length children’s short story

8 x 8″ lay-flat fairy tale book (combining story & images from session)

full, aluminum print wall display featuring story & images (one 20 x 50″ print, two 20 x 14, one 20 x 20)

9art photography, concept & lifestyle photographer, joplin mo- fairytale sessions2

I’m ending the post with the poem included in this first session. I’ll be posting a link to the full story, soon…

Adara’s bookbrush

In the back of their yard
near that hole in their fence
little Ara found books
stacked as high as a prince

from the Fae.

And she opened one up by the hole
that led down a dark way…

It had wordings inside
she had never once heard,
but beside it: paint brushes

with wipe on a word
in gold letters engraved on their sides.

She picked one and wiped it

upon the word “sword”
beside her a blade in a scabbard

was moored

to the bucket as if it had always been there.

So she picked up the book
and she walked through the gate
and she wiped the book’s words
and its words became wonders,
and the wonders, adventures,

but it all made her late
for her supper.

Max :: year 3

I’d like to re-introduce you to a young man always known for being in motion. True, most 3 year olds are known for that… but maybe not quite like Max…

9art photography, joplin mo- max's 3 yr portrait session04

9art photography, joplin mo- max's 3 yr portrait session01

It may have something to do with Max’s dad owning a gym and having been on ‘American Ninja Warrior’ this past year. I am sure there are better versions of this clip somewhere, but if you’re curious to see both dad Casey and mr. Max featured on national TV, you can take a look here:

The Finleys are also just pretty awesome people, and it was so cool to get to work with them for the third year running (it’s now tradition to have a new session done and book put together around Max’s birthday each year). Mom Leslie and brand new baby brother Jett complete the picture… I am sure we’ll have another session before long devoted more to the little guy.

Just wait til HE can move! 🙂

my view on a good portion of the shoot… not many toddlers get their own bounce house brought to a photo shoot. 🙂

the same shot from the beginning of the post, cropped out to its’ original format. No photoshoppery to make the kiddo look like he’s ‘flying’, just lots of air between dad and son.

Baby Corban

Hannah has been my cousin since… well, as long as I can remember. (I guess it’s that way with most cousins, hmm?)

After growing up with someone, it’s so strange- in a good way of course- to see them grown up, married, and now with a baby. Honestly though, I’m sure it’s much stranger for her to see ME grown up (or as grown up as I’ll get)… I imagine most of my cousins never thought that would happen. 😉

I traveled to Kansas City for this shoot with now 6 week old Corban, and proud parents Hannah & Brock. Here’s what we got…

Teresa & Zach:: MARRIED & stuff!

Oh good GRIEF this was a fun wedding. I mean, I knew it would be after shooting Teresa & Zach’s engagement session at the airport last year (you can view that session HERE) and with the continuing long-distance conversation over that last year.

The couple moved to San Francisco after Zach received a phenomenal job offer there, so needless to say, wedding planning was a bit stressful on these two. Imagine planning a wedding… from the other side of the country. 🙂

But they pulled it off beautifully, and it was a wonderfully lighthearted day. I’m going to give the highlights, then the full post:

Senior sessions, 9art style

9art photography, seniors photographer- alex's senior session019art photography, seniors photographer in Joplin MO- Cameron's senior session05

I honestly don’t work with a lot of (high school) seniors. It’s not that I WON’T or that I don’t enjoy it.  It’s that I don’t advertise it… there’s a lot of folks who do feature it as their own niche, and are doing a fantastic job with it.

So when I DO have a senior come my way, I know there’s one specific thought on their mind; they want something different. They sought me out for that, and we run from there.

I’m featuring my 2 most recent senior sessions, both guys, and they were both VERY excited about their sessions… which, let’s be honest, it’s s a little rarer for the male species to be excited about having their pictures taken (that includes myself).

The two are also very different from each other… I think it’s fun to contrast different personalities & interests and see how I can bring those personalities out in the images. That shows up even more placing the photos side by side.

   First off… Alex.

9art photography, seniors photographer- alex's senior session039art photography, seniors photographer- alex's senior session02

9art photography, seniors photographer- alex's senior session12

Alex’s passion is, unquestionably, music. Cello, bassoon, and guitar are in his arsenal. While watching him lug these things on the shoot, I asked if he wished at that moment he played something smaller… like harmonica.

9art photography, seniors photographer- alex's senior session04

9art photography, seniors photographer- alex's senior session05

Alex doesn’t stop at playing. He also composes and conducts. This brought some fun imagery to mind, and when I told him my idea, I think he got more excited about an idea than I’ve probably ever seen a senior get… an idea that resulted in this photo:

9art photography, seniors photographer- alex's senior session06

Its one my favorites from images I’ve captured this year.

how’d we do it? His mom & sister, standing on either side, throwing papers in the air for about 30 takes until we got that shot where they all landed perfect. (take THAT, photoshop). I was seriously afraid everyone would get really sick of me telling them to do it over and over, but everybody was just so excited about getting the shot they got caught up in the moment. So fun.

CAMERON::

Cameron’s passion is athletics. The man runs, lifts, and plays football like nobody’s business. I already had a chance to work with Cameron and his family earlier this year when I took pictures of them at their home in Carthage. We headed out to the schools to get these shots in the weightlifting room and on the field.

baby Harrison:: session 1

“I’ve heard people say “I just want a cheap photographer”, “pictures are too expensive” etc but I can honestly say, there’s         nothing better I’ve paid for in life. The days are long but the years are short and the beautiful pictures I have to document a   time in my children’s lives which is a BLUR have worth beyond any dollar amount you can give. The two hour photo shoot is   chaos each time and every time I think “NO WAY he got anything good out of that”. And EVERY TIME=AMAZING. I’m not   saying you need to spend a bunch of money to get good pictures, but I am saying I don’t believe there’s a better investment.”

9art photography- family photographer, Joplin mo - baby harrison's newborn pictures04

This is baby Harrison.

Mom Sarah is the one I quoted. I actually stole (with permission) the unsolicited endorsement from an unexpected facebook status. It is a powerful reminder that I’m in the right profession, and am beyond blessed to have the clients-turned-friends that I do.

This is the start of Harrison’s 1st year…

But the THIRD year I’ve gotten to work with the lovely Eidson family. Harrison’s sisters Olivia & Caroline are infamous if you follow my work closely at all… they’ve been muses for me these last couple of years as I traveled to Springfield to document them during THEIR first years.

Here they are now, holding their ‘baby’s first year’ books, in a couple of shots I snuck in while Harrison was getting a meal in the other room.

9art photography- family photographer, Joplin mo - baby harrison's newborn pictures02

9art photography- family photographer, Joplin mo - baby harrison's newborn pictures03

and NOW, to add to the news of the new baby, the Eidsons have also moved into my direct territory here in Joplin. Part of me is sad for not having more opportunities to hang out in Springfield when I work this family, but it’s also nice to have these folks as (almost) neighbors now. And I hope for more Springfield folks to travel to in the near future.

Mr. Harrison… welcome to Joplin, and to the WORLD! And to clients, both current and future… thanks for working with me and valuing these memories in the way you do. 🙂

Hannah & Carl :: married!

Sometimes, the enthusiasm, joy, (and beautiful goofiness) of the subjects are big enough… that I find myself afraid that I can’t capture it all in the photographs I’ve been hired to take.  Yes, I do still get nervous sometimes. After all, some days you can only shoot once. 🙂

Hopefully, I DID capture just those things and more in the following series of images from Hannah & Carl’s big day. Enjoy!

9art photography, joplin mo wedding photographer- hannah & carl at springhouse gardens1

The big day took place at Springhouse Gardens just outside of Joplin… hands down one of the best venues our area has to offer.

I love how Hannah & Carl handled the ‘first sight’… even during this emotionally charged moment when the groom sees his bride for the first time on the wedding day, they couldn’t hold back their acting side and enjoyed some big laughs…
