Cory & Kate wedding:: July 2017

Cory, Kate, & their two adorable kids have been regulars at the 9art Photobooth for some time. Like many of my photobooth regulars, they got to know me and my work well enough to trust me with something a little bigger.  In fact, they told me they wouldn’t have trusted anyone else- and that, my friends, means the world to me.

Some couples only want the beautiful pictures; the perfect looking ones. What I love about these two is that they’re a little crazy and they WANTED that craziness reflected in their photos. Humor and transparency is so important to them- to not capture a kiddo crying or the wedding party doing something ridiculous would do them a disservice.

This is life. Crazy, funny, emotional, and yes, still beautiful. I hope I did well in capturing every part of their day and personalities in a way that honors them.

Oh, and these incredibly sweet and funny kids of theirs… what a pleasure to photograph them for the day.

Fun with Flour

Sometimes, you’ve already shot a full wedding, and you’re tired, and the last thing you expect is for inspiration to strike.

At a teenage girls’ birthday party.

But then you hear there’s going to be a ‘flour fight’ and you realize this could be super fun to shoot and you set up a light and start playing.

Here’s the random results of all that…

Side note, for those who were wondering how that black background is working… no, I did not set up a black backdrop, and it was actually still completely light outside. I just cranked up my alien bee (strobe flash) so that the light on the subjects is super bright and the background is darkened out wherever the light doesn’t reach. Fun stuff. 🙂 If you look super closely, you can still see hints of the bushes behind the subjects.

thoughts on the trend + my kids

So I’ve been busy for sure, but not the super glamorous/exciting kind of photography that you really put in a blog post. I photographed two factories and, wait for it, a truck stop… yes, when I tweeted the other day that I was literally editing photos of a truck stop bathroom, I wasn’t joking.

Not to complain, in the least. I always enjoy photographing something new, no matter how unexciting it may appear at first. It’s an invigorating challenge to me take a subject like… a truck stop bathroom… and figure out how to make it interesting to look at. How to still make the viewer feel something when they’re seeing that image.

In this case, ‘Man. I want to use THAT bathroom.’

Since I haven’t posted in awhile and I’m pretty sure no-one is going to be enthralled to view my truck stop photos (even if it IS a very nice truck stop), I’m going to my default… pictures of my children. Because they’re cute, and we all know it. But here’s a little more thought on these photos, first…

I’ve been playing with some new editing techniques. I’m the guy that’s remained stubborn and steered clear of the whole VSCO trend up to this point. If you don’t know what that is… it’s the set of presets that make every photo look like it’s from 1965 even though it’s 2015. It’s the photographic equivalent of replacing all your furniture with mid-century-modern. [I hate to admit it, but I LOVE midcentury modern].

But I’ve been a grumpy old man and wanted to not do what everyone else is doing and said I’d NEVER use one of those damn presets. Until…

I received some advice from a trusted and very talented colleague who’s far and away in the next phase of photographic success. His advice pertained to some of my images appearing ‘too digital’. Very interesting.

After looking back through the particular project I’d showed him, I realized he was absolutely right. I’d worked hard with the lighting and setting to create a mood, but there was still something missing. Too crisp. Too perfect. Too digital.

So… I did some research. I broke down and downloaded some presets. I slapped some of them on photos and yep, sure enough…. they looked beautiful. In a sense.

A very very trendy sort of sense. As in, ‘oh. THESE are the presets that every photographer who has entered the photographerforce in the past 5 years is using.’

Love/hate relationship there. I never want to be stale. I always want to be changing, growing, learning, experimenting. But let that thinking carry too far, and you become one who is simply swept away with every new trend. (selective color, anyone?)

It reminds me of a line from a C.S. Lewis book… ‘the greatest triumph of all [for those who might work to stop us, from doing our best] is to elevate this horror of the same old thing [emphasis mine] into a philosophy.’ In other words, if we’re TOO scared of becoming stagnant in our work, we actually become obsessed with staying ahead of the curve and go from being trendsetters to being trend chasers.

I heard it best in a recent Tim Ferriss podcast: ‘when you try to chase what’s cool, you’re already too late.’

That’s always my question. How do I be ‘modern’ and ‘now’ with my work? How do I do that… but walk away with images that might still be considered timeless and original when I look at them again in 20 years?

I don’t have an easy answer. I think it has something to do with never compromising your original voice. [and if you’re a new artist and haven’t found that voice yet, read THIS BOOK].

So the question shouldn’t be ‘is this effect cool?’ it should be ‘is this effect something that helps my images say what I need them to say?’ Keep the question the same. But yes, playLEARNplay, keep learning new techniques, figure out what others have done well, just so long as you know how to then make it your own.

That’s probably enough philosophizing for now…

So here’s the first batch of experimentation. The one where I’m just using photos of my kids, and yes, these photo edits look film like and dreamy and, probably overdone and SUPER trendy. But I’m working through the experimenting to find a new look that’s all mine again… that’s what it’s all about, right?

Stay tuned.

the Caldwells

The Caldwells are another family I’ve been working with for some time now, watching Caegan & Leighalla grow through the sessions. Mom Lisa & dad Corban moved the fam to Kansas City last year, but being amazing and incredibly sweet clients, they still come back to Joplin for photos every few months to document their little family. I couldn’t be more honored.

We took these in the John Wise mansion, a beautiful historic building in downtown Joplin, that the the owner was kind enough let us borrow for a couple of hours.

I think I’ll let the pictures do the rest of the talking… the chaos, laughter, tears, climbing, kicking, hunger, discovery, and 100 other beautiful emotions that come during a 90mn session with toddlers. 🙂

Tarzan Zerbini circus, Joplin MO

Got to go to the circus a couple of weeks ago, for the first time since I was a kid. Now, here I am taking MY kids. They loved it, of course, and thank goodness my battery died halfway through it so I could stop shooting and just watch.

But before that point… I took a picture or two. 🙂

Kate [1 year old]

Miss Kate just turned 1 year old.

Um, it feels like a couple of weeks ago that we shot her newborn session.

Feels like a couple of weeks before that since I was photographing her mom & dad’s wedding (that’d be 5 years ago now).

-2 (4)

I’m starting to get that ‘experience’ feeling… and I kinda like it… I’ve been doing this photography thing for awhile now. Maybe someday I’ll be shooting Kate’s wedding.

Whoa!

Here’s Kate. We kept the session simple, and did it in the family’s home. She loves balloons, getting into cabinets, and sitting in her great grandma’s rocking chair… that’s all we needed to tell the story of Kate that day.

A glimpse of the season

fall family and kids portraits by joplin mo photographer 9art photography_0001b
I’ve been kinda quiet on here lately. Me being quiet means one of two things…

A. I’m hopelessly depressed
B. I’m super crazy busy.

I’m pretty incredibly glad it’s not A… B has been kickin’ my butt, but that’s B-ok.

All that to say, I’ve taken 1,0000,0000 pictures in the past few months that I haven’t had a chance to take the time to show. A lot of those pictures were for awesome commercial projects, and a good portion of them were for lifestyle shoots for 9art family & senior clients.

Before the next year is completely up on us… which is oh-so-near… I thought I’d share a few of my favorite shots from the past couple of months from those portrait sessions (specifically, those sessions that took advantage of the beautiful fall colors). More commercial work coming soon!

Stepping into a F A I R Y T A L E :: session 2 (the chicken steeper)

A story no-one else can duplicate…

fairy tale tea party concept shoot by lifestyle and editorial photographer 9art photography, Joplin MO_0005b

It has been a minute since the first entry of a big project that my friend Lance & I dreamed up. But the project was not forgotten…

The thought was simple; a series that custom caters stories in words and photographs around the personality of your child. This isn’t something I’ve seen done before… and I’m all about trying new things. The idea to tie a customized story to a set of special photographs made for a child…  so. much. fun!

I’m not going to get into all the details of what one of these fairy tale packages entail in this post, but if you’d like to find out more about it, all the information is here.

For now, I’d like you to enjoy the images & the poem, part 1 of this entry into our series. Next week, Lance will release part 2, the story, and we will share that with you as well.

Pictured, by the way, is miss Kendall. I have taken pictures of her big brother Roman since pretty much the beginning of 9art…..I am so thankful to their mom Christina for being such an incredibly supportive and faithful client over the last few years. And also, Christina… thanks for having stinkin’ cute kids. 🙂

The chicken steeper

When Roman goes in for his nap
Miss Kendall finds her trail
of bows so big and brighter straps,
of glittered grass and snails,
of upturned high-heeled shoes entrapped
in paintings hung with nails
reading, “This aways! That aways!
Follow invisible paths!”

Deep down into the woods
Miss Kendall’s tucked some chairs,
a table, cloth and teacups, spoons,
and bags for her affairs.
She always leads her old hen out
and borrows little feathers.
She adds tea kettle heat to them
in cups like bottled weather.

the table, chairs, and cases
from monsters, mice, the shades and shards,
and all the unknown faces).

Fun with the Franks

Family pictures should be fun. No! Seriously! They should be FUN. Does that mean every second is fun and there is no awkwardness? Well, no, of course not… let’s not be ridiculous.

But shouldn’t there be moments of genuine laughter, moments when we LET the kids make silly faces, moments where, just for a split second, we forget why we’re there and just enjoy it?

I firmly believe that’s how it should be. It takes some work to get us there… to overcome the camera awareness, to defocus from the posing, to try to achieve spontaneity without compromising the quality of a professional photograph… but I’ll work at it, every time, and if you hire me, I promise it will be worth it.

Here’s the Franks family… dad Dustin, mom Janell, daughters Kaitlynn, Hannah, & Emma.
