film noir photobooth

The ‘film noir’ theme is probably my favorite for the photobooth. I get to pay tribute to film noir and also prep for a NEW SHOW (this is my sneaky announcement) in October featuring work from the project ‘cold brewed‘. The show will be up for the entire month of October at the Post Memorial Art Library, located in the Joplin library.

For the ‘booth, I used bare bulb flash for that shadowy look, lots of trench coats and fedoras, and some willing regulars… thanks, as always to Spiva Center for the Arts for graciously hosting the event.

I love that my buddy Shaun looks like an insane Dicky-Tracy-villain-mugshot here…

We got bored at one point when there was a lull in people traffic.  So using available models (Shaun, who works at Spiva, and Tatum, my delightful assistant for the night) and taking advantage of Spiva’s amazing retro doors, we took a few stills…

….which proggressively became less moody and more cartoonish as time went on…

NEWS // NEWS // NEWS

While, I kinda dropped off the face of the earth there for a little bit… ok, not really… but that’s certainly how it feels when you’re off for two weeks and are missing your phone for most of it.

The time off was planned, the phone absence wasn’t… I learned a great life lesson, which is never to underestimate the power of a kiddie ride at worlds of fun. The tiny semi I stuffed myself into (because my 4 year old daughter was 2 inches too short to ride anything on her own) may not LOOK like it’s going to go very fast. But that doesn’t mean it can’t suddenly lurch forward with incredible velocity, throwing your phone out of your hand and on to the tiny tiny track where it it will run over said phone 5 times before the ride is over…

But that’s not to complain. It was no FANCY vacation, but taking two weeks with my family- some of it away, some of it at home- was much needed and very good for me and mine. I read (like, a whole book), water parked, swam, fished, played board games, introduced my kids to Andy Griffith and ‘Star Trek:Next Generation’ and ate more greasy spoon breakfasts than I care to confess to.

Anyway. I’m back in business, literally and figuratively, with a new (old) phone in hand and plenty of work in front of me to catch up. The first thing to catch up on is letting you guys know what’s going on. So here’s a couple of announcements, especially for folks in the Joplin, MO area this week:

#1:: I HAVE A SHOW!

9-low res

I’ve kept pretty quiet about it until now, but I have my first solo show in over 10 years (yep, since college), hanging RIGHT NOW at Joplin Ave Coffee Co in downtown Joplin. I’m so excited to be able to say that. A big, big thanks to Cleo’s framing, Cherry’s framing, and especially to Shaun Conroy from Spiva for helping me get everything matted and hung.

So yeah. Stop by and see it. I would post pictures, but then you wouldn’t have to go see it, would you? 😉

The show will hang for the entire month of August, so if you don’t make it in for the art walk, you’ve still got plenty of time to take look at it.

#2:: PHOTOBOOTH!

Tomorrow marks the second ‘1st thursday’ art walk this year, and I’ll be present at Spiva Center for the Arts with my photobooth. This months’ theme is ‘superhero’… an old favorite of everyone’s, with a prize this time going to the best original costume idea. Of course, we’ll have plenty of props on hand, as always…

#3:: NOW BOOKING FALL SESSIONS!

004

It’s crazy to think that school is almost here and I’m even mentioning anything about fall, but… well, it’s not too far away and it wouldn’t hurt to start thinking about it if you’ve considered booking a portrait session this fall. You can take a look my main site for more info about that.

That’s all for now… new shoots and announcements are rolling in soon, so keep an eye out!

may photobooth: a story by siblings improv + 9art

This third thursday (the day that Joplin hosts an art walk every month, as of a few years now), I got to do probably the most innovative thing I’ve done yet with the photobooth.

It’s all about collaboration… this time with the one and only SIBLINGS IMPROV, a local improv group started by some folks I know that wanted the art of comedy & and collaboration to thrive in our little city.

1

Eric (pictured above), Drew, and the other folks at improv meet every Tuesday night to teach, learn, hone their craft and develop camaraderie with other local improvers (and would-be improvers). Our local paper even wrote up a little article about it…

Who better, to help me host a photobooth devoted solely to story, to an unpredictable tale, told by the very folks to who populate my photographic storytelling stage each month here in downtown Joplin?

The initial idea was simple… find a way to collaborate with Siblings. These folks of course RAN with the idea, helping set up a framework for a story that would run the course of the night.

I had to be careful. I knew if I said the word ‘improv’ that folks might be weary and think things like ‘oh I can’t do improv’…. which is the very reason I announced this photobooth as having a ‘surprise’ theme.

3TH- may 2015 flyer

Once we knew were doing this thing, we set up a plan. Here’s what it was:

Each photo got one line of the ongoing epic poem, written on the spot, by the member of Siblings that was present for their half hour ‘shift’. The Siblings member furthermore stepped in and helped direct each group, telling the story through the use of those present and the weird, random props we assembled to assist us.

Here is that story.

Does it make sense?

Absolutely not.

Does it matter?

Nope.

It’s fun. It was on-the-spot. It was new. THAT’S what matters.

Have fun…

Rockwell comes to life:: phase 2

You might remember this image I captured awhile back, the first in a series intended to both pay tribute to Norman Rockwell, and to make a comment on the effects of technology of our post-Rockwell generation.

norman rockwell 9art photography technology series, image #1- age of romance

That image was also intended to promote a 2nd idea brought to me by my good friend Shaun at Spiva Center for the Arts. The local Joplin, MO art gallery had a norman rockwell ‘saturday evening post’ exhibit coming to their way, and Shaun asked me… ‘what if people re-created their OWN ‘Saturday Evening Post’ covers and you took the pictures?’

So… we did it. 🙂

It’s always a little scary taking on a new idea like this, one whose success specifically hinges on whether or not other people will DO IT… but I’m so, so glad we did, because the community came through. We had 15 final images from 12 teams; and that was pared down from a much larger group of interested folks (some of whom just couldn’t make it that night).

Each team- whether a business, a family, or group of friends- had the option of interpreting a Norman Rockwell illustration (we expanded the guidelines past just ‘post’ covers) in whatever way they liked. They had the responsibility of pulling the props, outfits, and models together for their final image.

norman rockwell post cover contest collaboration with spiva arts in joplin mo by 9art photography_0004b

All images were shot in one evening. Since we had so many people to work with and since part of the idea of creating-your-own-rockwell-tribute meant also creating your own set, we left our background very simple with a plain white paper roll, and used a paint splattered drop cloth (fitting?) as our ‘floor’. I pushed the perfectionist in myself to the side and let people arrange their own ‘sets’, helping them tweak things as we went.

Because this project was different…. it wasn’t about MY photography. It was about people taking part in something different, paying tribute to art by making their own piece. People were super creative, and it was fun to give them a reason to be. We were just there to help them do that.

You can see the whole series on Spiva’s facebook page by clicking the link.

[copyright limitations prevent me from being able to post the full batch of ‘side-by-sides’ w/ the original illustrations on my blog. Here’s the link to the full gallery: SPIVA]

If you feel moved to do so and live in the Joplin area, you should totally go vote for your favorite. Votes are being taken AT spiva (third and wall, downtown) until this Saturday evening.

Way to go, Joplin. Let’s keep doing fun stuff together.

last photobooth of the season… costume contest & all

74

Last one of the season! If you live in Joplin- or within a 50 mile radius- this is the one to come to. The theme is ‘costumes’ (how original?) and yes, there WILL be a contest for best original costume. Lots of other great things going on for Joplin’s third thursday art walk as well, so I hope to see you there.

If you don’t live in the area, stay tuned anyway to the blog & fb page to see some ridiculous upcoming photos. 🙂

I was excited this month to have props loaned from Joplin schools, Missouri Southern, and several kind individuals so those that stopped by could sport their favorite school colors.

Here’s a few of my favorites, while you’re waiting on the whole batch to show up on the book of faces!

august, joplin photobooth: sci fi theme!

joplin missouri springfield mo- lifestyle and commercial photographer 9art photography- third thursday sci fi themed photobooth_0004b

As per usual, 9art hosted a Photo Booth at Joplin, MO’s one and only third thursday art walk. This month’s theme was ‘sci fi’… which gave us a nice range of possibilities, from star trek to dr who to star wars (don’t you confuse with star trek. DON’T YOU DO IT)!

Of course, it really just ended up being about the lightsabers… there are few things more fun to pose with than lightsabers, when it comes down to it.

here ya go…

I’m gonna close out with a side-by-side: Chris & Sam from ‘Images in Tile’ (their co-worker John is pictured above with the wonderful green hair). Chris is re-creating an image I took a few years back of Chris’ star wars loving, superposin’ boys. Every so often they re-do the pose at a Photo Booth, but since they weren’t able to be there this time, Chris and Sam decided to give it a go. Not bad fellas, not bad at all. 😉

July (third thursday) joplin Photobooth:: GATSBY

9art photobooth for 'third thursday' in joplin, mo- gatsby 1920s themed photo booth_0003b

Well, we got through another round of third thursday chaos… and, as we generally do, walked away with some super fun pictures. This month’s photobooth theme was ‘Gatsby’… in other words, 1920s. I thought the reference to Gatsby would help folks visualize it, since the newest film is still fresh in many of our minds.

july 3TH photobooth flyer #1

As a side note, I HAD to use the still above  from the film- the outrageously dramatic scene in which ‘Gatsby’ (played by DeCaprio of course) introduces himself. It’s the best introduction into a movie I’ve ever seen for DeCaprio, and honestly, maybe my favorite intro for any character. Whether the film itself is your cup of tea or not, you should at least watch the scene…

So yes. that’s the sort of ridiculous playfulness I was hoping for…

Finding props to fit the themes is always a challenge, but thanks to folks like our friend Kolourz- who ALWAYS has a giant bag full of perfectly themed items- we had some great items to piece together for that roaring twenties look.

Now a completely different note. One I hope doesn’t seem to out-of-nowhere with it’s more sober nature. I’d like to say that if a Photo Booth is something you can dedicate, I’d like to do just that to the memory of Trevor James Poulton.

Trever was a young photobooth regular who unexpectedly passed away in his sleep this past month. I have been talking back and forth with his mother Stephanie, who let me know that he is the reason she started coming to third thursday to take pictures.  She plans to continue to come each month as a a tribute to him.

here she and her family are from last night, in a very sweet picture of her holding up a 5 x 7 of Trevor from LAST month’s photobooth that I’d printed for her.

[this is Trevor & his family last month]

Life is short, and we so easily forget. Stephanie is an inspiration for her attitude of one who remembers, but does it while smiling and honoring that memory with a new tradition.

I love all my regulars. I love how I can connect to this community through something so simple. And I love how much a silly picture can end up meaning.

Here’s the rest of the batch, ol’ sport.

third thursday photobooth: ‘fairy tale’ theme (june 2014)

joplin mo third thursday photobooth- 9art photography's fairy tale themed photo booth event_0006
As most of you know, Joplin MO hosts a sweet event every month known as ‘third thursday’, during which folks come out to eat some delicious downtown food, view local art, and participate in 9art’s themed photobooth.

This is the 2nd month Michelle & I have set things up in the upstairs at Spiva Center for the Arts, and we continue to be honored and delighted that they’ve allowed us to partner with them.

I’m also super excited about the pictures from this month. When I said we were doing a ‘fairy tale’ theme, I had princess dresses and a Disney sort of look in mind… but the theme is always at the mercy (or benefit) of the props we come up with.

I’m EXTREMELY fortunate to be friends with folks who don’t think dress up should only be taken seriously when you’re a kid. Special thanks to Ellie Soderstrom, Kolurz Voss (pictured at the very bottom of this post), and others who graciously donated their goodies for us to use this month. The booth definitely ended up taking more of a ‘game of thrones’ feel than straight up ‘fairy tale’ haha, but I think it turned out perfect. This was me, testing out some of the borrowed items… the broadsword is actually borrowed for a separate series I’m working on, and was, alas, a bit too realistic (ala dangerous) to have out at the booth. Doesn’t mean I couldn’t wield it in the parking lot…

Enjoy looking through these, and just so you know, it’s only a preview… the FULL BATCH will hit facebook sometime in the next week-to-week-&-1/2. Thanks guys! 🙂
