Makenzie & Nate wedding

Mackenzie & Nate are lovely people with a fuller reception that I’ve seen in some time. When this many people show up to your wedding and reception (record observed number of simultaneous “cupid shuffle” dancers for me), you’ve gotta be good people. Or famous. I don’t think they’re famous. So that seems to answer what kind of people they are… ūüėČ

Enjoy perusing this set from the day!

Derek & Lauren: 6/22/18

Derek & Lauren hired me because I capture personalities and humor. They told me they laughed for an hour while going through my wedding portfolio… and while that might not always be a compliment for a photographer, it sure was in this case. I knew it meant they were perusing all the goofy, ridiculous moments I’ve gotten and realizing I’d get their sense of humor down in images just the same.

It was hot, yes, but a wonderful day- it’s rare you see the full cast and crew of the big day so relaxed, so sweet, so very dancy.

I loved this day and hope you do too!

9art:: 2014/15

Hey, interweb-land. It’s been a good month since I’ve posted a thing… and some of you are still heaving your sighs of relief in response to the silence.

I’m not going to spend a super long time reflecting on 2014. Here’s a rundown, for those who are curious what’s up with me:

– The first 2/3ds of the year was fairly quiet and fairly slow. Summer was paaaaaiiiiiiinfully slow, in fact. Photography is always unpredictable I suppose, especially when you’re shifting the direction of your business (in my case, taking less weddings/families and pursuing more commercial work). And sometimes, you ¬†need a slow season to figure out where the heck you are in LIFE. Talked (and sometimes yelled) to God a lot. Examined myself as an artist. Came out a lot better for the time.

I also read this book. It helped a lot:

TheCrowdTheCriticAndTheMuse
-Then Fall hit. BAM!! 180!!! Busiest season I’ve ever had (I think). Up til’ Christmas week I was scrambling to wrap up editing, deliver orders, and plan for a major project. Exhausting, but certainly a blessing. And, my firstborn started kindergarten… whoa. (he loves, it BTW).

joplin missouri springfield mo family photographer 9art photography_0007

-2 weeks before Christmas, my camera was stolen. An added layer of scrambling to get a new one in place & wrestle with insurance companies. I won half that battle….one company was nice (and payed 1/2), the other wasn’t. Ah well, close enough. While I don’t appreciate the circumstances, I DO have a brand spankin’ new nikon D810- which features 3x the megapixel count, better performance, and, I’m scared to say, really decent video capability. (I say ‘scared’ bc I’m afraid of the obsession that’s going to begin when I really start playing with MOVING pictures).

Nikon-D810-DSLR-camera2

-Christmas break was a fantastic reprieve, from everything. Christmas is fun all over again when you have kiddos, so that’s always great.

20

Best of all, my wife and I escaped for a few days for our TEN YEAR anniversary. Good grief, I suddenly feel old. I’m so thankful for a caring wife that would put up with me and my erratic personality & business for that long. Fortunately, God came up with someone as weird as I am…

66

-January third marked PHOTONOVEL time. For those who haven’t heard- funding was finally approved in september for a ¬†long-talked-about project that would creatively reunite my good friend Lance Schuabert & I (my co-conspirator for ‘cold brewed’). The project was produced by our friend Carrie Puffinbarger for the Joplin Convention & Visitors’ Bureau– it’s a new story told in words (Lance) and pictures (me). It’s all shot in Joplin, and features a fun ‘faction’ weave of real & imaginary characters, actual history and fictional story lines that work through past and present.

Maybe the whole thing was just an excuse for Lance & I to dress up with legit Civil War re-enactors… we’ll never tell.

3

Lance came in from Brooklyn, NY (his new home as of last summer) and we began shooting on Jan third, wrapping up on Jan 17th. I’ve never put in more packed hours of shooting as I did in that time frame, with a huge list of locations, a shooting script, hired actors, makeup artists, prop lists and many other characteristics of a full-on film production (just without the ‘film’ part). It was exhausting, but also a reminder that this is the scope of the kind of projects I want to keep doing.

8

10

There’s still quite a bit of work to be done on it- and, no, you won’t be able to see it any sooner than a few months from now- but I really think it’s going to be worth the wait. ¬†In the meanwhile, if you never did, you can check out cold brewed (that last project we did) HERE. ¬†Or, keep up on the facebook page with all the weird outtakes (such as the ones above).

12

– Now is a time of quieting back down (I’m safe and sound, back in my usual seat in the local coffee shop), wrapping up the last few shoots for the photonovel project, and planning for the new year. I think it’s going to be a great one.

Stay tuned for posts in coming weeks… I’ll be sharing some things I didn’t have a chance to show you all late last year. Til next time!

Caegan: SESSION 3

¬† ¬† Another baby turned toddler; I’ve seen mr. Caegan go from newborn to very expressive, bouncy little man. take in the CUTENESS!

¬† ¬†This is actually the note we started on. Caegan had just woken up and I was a little too close a little too fast…

he warmed up fast.

this is the expression of an unimpressed toddler. take that, perfect family picture. (he had many such expressions).

sometimes I have to turn around to snap a picture of what the parent is doing to get the kiddo to smile…¬†

It’s a good thing nobody is there to turn the camera on ME, bc I’m generally doing some pretty ridiculous things when I’m taking pictures of toddlers.

COLD BREWED :: episode 1 :: TODAY.

(poster design credit goes to Oscar Gonzalez).

Questions I’ve had asked lately:

‘What IS Cold Brewed?’¬†

¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† It’s a story. inspired by film. Told in words and pictures. (no video, to those that ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬†¬†

have wondered). It is my pet project with my very good friend, Lance Schaubert.

‘how will you be releasing it?’

¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† in a series of weekly online ‘episodes’ over the next 3 months.¬†

‘when do we get to see it?’

              Starting right NOW.

I’d love to present to you, the first episode of Cold Brewed. Please spread the word, tell your friends, hit ‘like’, copy the link, tweet it, facebook it, send a telegram or two…because we are EXCITED about this story we’ve poured our heart into making and want to see it spread across the web.

Frontline

¬† ¬† Did these shots awhile back, and never had a chance to post them. Largest (non-wedding party) group I’ve worked with… the 11 members of local Ozark Christian College’s traveling worship band, ‘frontline’. Always love something different!

THIS IS A NEW POST that SAYS STUFF but DOESN’T HAVE ANY NEW PICTURES

Welcome to September, loyal fans. ¬†I have a couple of things to say. Because sometimes (and only sometimes) a picture just doesn’t paint enough words

       I love you guys.

¬† ¬† ¬† ¬†I couldn’t do what I do without your support. So thanks for every kind comment you’ve posted, every referral you’ve made, every friend you’ve showed my work to, for every ‘like’ you’ve hit up on the book of faces.

¬† ¬† ¬† ¬†I’ve had a studio presence in downtown joplin for 1 YEAR now. That’s pretty exciting. In that year a lot of things have happened, both good and bad; what’s important is we’re all still here, Joplin is going strong, and so is 9art.

So you clicked on this because I said something about announcements, and ‘I love you’ is a little lame for an announcement, I know… so here’s 5 9art FACTS that you should probably know in this last deadly month of summer…

(this list is better than the last list because it’s numbered).

¬† ¬† ¬† ¬†#1: the Third Thursday photobooth will resume as normal this month… so check September 15th off on your calendars.

¬† ¬† ¬† ¬†#2: I am holding a CONTEST to choose the theme this month for the photobooth. I can’t come up with all the good ideas on my own… so I want to see what you come up with. So head back over to facebook, and post your idea as a comment on my status. I’ll snatch up the one that sounds like the most fun and give the person with the original idea three free prints (8 x 10 or smaller) from this month’s photobooth.

#3: I will be having a superfun SPECIAL to celebrate the 1st year for 9art being downtown. That special will be available in OCTOBER and will be announced on the 15th (the official 1 year mark.)

¬† ¬† ¬† ¬†#4: Just a random reminder…. I take CREDIT CARDS now! woohoo!

#5: I really like homeade chocolate chip cookies. If you bring me some at your next

¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬†session,¬†I’ll probably give you a free print or something. seriously. I’m weak like that.

¬† ¬† And fine, fine, here’s a photo…. remember, you’ve to to at least match july’s theme to win that contest….

EF5:: chapter 1 (devastation)

¬†¬† ¬† ¬†This is part 1 in an ongoing series that will cover the effects of the joplin tornado. This post contains pictures that deal specifically with the most obvious aspect; the destruction itself. I know you’ve already seen a million pictures that show the devastation caused on May 22nd, but it’s something you have to address as a photographer before you can go deeper; and I tried to focus (yes, literally…) on the surreal aspects.

One building untouched (and still in business); another torn apart right next to it.

some of the strangest sunrise landscapes now.

door with no home.

couch with no living room.

a tree is a makeshift flagpole/street sign…

positive messages left.

not so positive messages let. (and not too meaningful when there’s nothing to keep out OF anymore).

commercial & residential alike.

Joplin :: 1 month later

¬†¬† ¬†If you follow this blog, you’ll notice I haven’t posted anything for a month. Most of you know why. After an EF5 tore 1/3 of my town apart on May 22, I’ve been re-constructing life for my family. A close up on what was our living room:

And then, from a little further back… (shot by my sister Veronica from her blog)

¬†¬† ¬†That sounds (and looks) pretty dramatic. Ok, it IS pretty dramatic. But when it comes down to it…. we’re ok. My wife, our 2 children, every family member and friend I know personally, is ok- and everything else is just stuff.

¬†¬† ¬†Some of you also know the story of my camera being lost…. it was in that living room- turns out (as we realized later) that a semi went through that living room. So while stuff IS still just stuff, with no home, no camera, no STUFF at all… how do you move on from that? The answer for me is God. I am a Christian and there is no doubt that we have been taken care of by a God with a plan in the midst of what sometimes only looks like chaos. But specifically, God has sent us people to take care of us.

Family, friends, and total strangers from near and far have written us checks, given us their furniture, brought groceries, bought diapers, moved us into a new home, lent their cameras & equipment for my wedding commitments (forever thanks to Will Vastine, Artistic Expressions, and Glenn Landberg) and helped us go through the rubble. A good friend said a little something about me on, and through that blog, enough money was raised to RE-BUY my camera & lenses. Thanks more than I can express to the folks at the gig.

¬†¬† ¬† ¬†So it’s a month later. Now what? We are re-settled. New home, new furniture, new camera, new clothes, new appliances, and more toothbrushes than we’ll use in a life time. We’re still a little exhausted from all the moving, sorting, paperwork, etc, but it’s finally starting to die down. That being said, it’s finally time to get back to work… so you’ll be seeing a more steady stream of posts again in coming days as I ease back into the ol’ workflow.

¬†¬† ¬† ¬†Some of that work for me is a mammoth personal project to document, in many different ways, the effect that a tornado has left on Joplin. I wasn’t sure how to do that at first, but for sure, every day that makes itself a little more clear. It’s not all going to be devastation pictures, and it won’t all be pictures of flags hanging from rubble… it will be the unexpected, the ironic, the humorous, the beautiful, the terrible, and most of all the people side of things as this city recovers.

¬†¬† There will be different chapters to this documentary project: they’ll be mixed into the normal kids/wedding/commercial posts, so it might feel a little abrupt sometimes… but really, that’s how life is here in Joplin. Returning to normal life, with lots of strange little reminders of the crazy thing that happened here and the amazing ways people are being given their lives back.¬†
