Fun with Flour

Sometimes, you’ve already shot a full wedding, and you’re tired, and the last thing you expect is for inspiration to strike.

At a teenage girls’ birthday party.

But then you hear there’s going to be a ‘flour fight’ and you realize this could be super fun to shoot and you set up a light and start playing.

Here’s the random results of all that…

Side note, for those who were wondering how that black background is working… no, I did not set up a black backdrop, and it was actually still completely light outside. I just cranked up my alien bee (strobe flash) so that the light on the subjects is super bright and the background is darkened out wherever the light doesn’t reach. Fun stuff. 🙂 If you look super closely, you can still see hints of the bushes behind the subjects.

Max :: year 3

I’d like to re-introduce you to a young man always known for being in motion. True, most 3 year olds are known for that… but maybe not quite like Max…

It may have something to do with Max’s dad owning a gym and having been on ‘American Ninja Warrior’ this past year. I am sure there are better versions of this clip somewhere, but if you’re curious to see both dad Casey and mr. Max featured on national TV, you can take a look here:

The Finleys are also just pretty awesome people, and it was so cool to get to work with them for the third year running (it’s now tradition to have a new session done and book put together around Max’s birthday each year). Mom Leslie and brand new baby brother Jett complete the picture… I am sure we’ll have another session before long devoted more to the little guy.

Just wait til HE can move! 🙂

Senior sessions, 9art style

9art photography, seniors photographer- alex's senior session019art photography, seniors photographer in Joplin MO- Cameron's senior session05

I honestly don’t work with a lot of (high school) seniors. It’s not that I WON’T or that I don’t enjoy it.  It’s that I don’t advertise it… there’s a lot of folks who do feature it as their own niche, and are doing a fantastic job with it.

So when I DO have a senior come my way, I know there’s one specific thought on their mind; they want something different. They sought me out for that, and we run from there.

I’m featuring my 2 most recent senior sessions, both guys, and they were both VERY excited about their sessions… which, let’s be honest, it’s s a little rarer for the male species to be excited about having their pictures taken (that includes myself).

The two are also very different from each other… I think it’s fun to contrast different personalities & interests and see how I can bring those personalities out in the images. That shows up even more placing the photos side by side.

   First off… Alex.

Alex’s passion is, unquestionably, music. Cello, bassoon, and guitar are in his arsenal. While watching him lug these things on the shoot, I asked if he wished at that moment he played something smaller… like harmonica.

9art photography, seniors photographer- alex's senior session04

Alex doesn’t stop at playing. He also composes and conducts. This brought some fun imagery to mind, and when I told him my idea, I think he got more excited about an idea than I’ve probably ever seen a senior get… an idea that resulted in this photo:

Its one my favorites from images I’ve captured this year.

how’d we do it? His mom & sister, standing on either side, throwing papers in the air for about 30 takes until we got that shot where they all landed perfect. (take THAT, photoshop). I was seriously afraid everyone would get really sick of me telling them to do it over and over, but everybody was just so excited about getting the shot they got caught up in the moment. So fun.

flipped to a different setting and more casual outfit for a less dressed up Alex:

CAMERON::

Cameron’s passion is athletics. The man runs, lifts, and plays football like nobody’s business. I already had a chance to work with Cameron and his family earlier this year when I took pictures of them at their home in Carthage. We headed out to the schools to get these shots in the weightlifting room and on the field.

nature! It was cool to be able to head out to the woods where Cameron spent a good chunk of his childhood on his family’s property. I have some forest areas like that back at MY ol’ homestead…

the Scotts :: commercial photography featuring… photographers

Being hired by your competition to take photos of them is kinda cool. Especially when your competition is as fun as the Scotts.

_002b

David & Whitney, the couple behind ‘Whitney Scott photography’, are much more my friends than they are my competition.  David’s goofy sense of humor matches up well with mine to lead to pun-wars on facebook, and Whitney’s healthy sense of rivalry leads to ‘I hate you’ comments on photos she likes that I post on my business page. (all in good fun. I think).

Whitney took family pictures for my own clan 2 years ago, and I worked with the Scotts last year on a promotional shoot for Black River Imaging, for an image featured in a 2 page spread in 3 different national photography magazines. The Scotts are quickly becoming pretty hot stuff in the photog world… several recent speaking tours for big-time names in the industry like Sandy Puc.

The Scotts called me back in this year to do a new round of fun images in their home,  for which they had some great ideas.

We began with the kitchen. They needed a ‘scene’ which showed the fullness of their lives at home… running a photography business, homeschooling their kids, and maintaining a balanced household.

The setup.  David is in ‘pancake flipping’ stance… Emma is… I really don’t know what Emma is doing.

commercial photo shoot with whitney scott photography

and, the final image (or, at least, an alternate of it):    YES, the pancake flip is real. Whitney told me we could just photoshop that pancake in, and I refused. Capturing things in midair w/out the aid of photoshop is something I’m proud of… but really, I’m more proud of David for this awesome flip.  🙂

After this, we moved to…

the bedroom.

Don’t worry, no NSFW stuff coming up. Just another literal interpretation of ‘taking your work home with you.’

I DO have a shot of David in his towel though. preparing said towel took a few minutes….

Mr. Oliver: session 3

Oliver is the too-cute kid of one of my favorite people in the world… Matt Spiel, and his lovely wife Amber. Matt is my official designer, you could sorta say… he tweaked the logo into the beautiful visual creation it is now, and lays out my ads for me (which you can see around town on the bluestream tv’s). Amber is responsible for the neverending stream of chocolate chip cookies at the Spiel home, for which I am also extremely grateful.

This was a fun shoot with a great ‘summer feel’, which was nice to get in before the new wave of fall shoots. Enjoy!

We started off with hats. Really, putting hats on a toddler is more of a game. So I went with that….

_020b

there was ONE hat that he stuck with… the fedora. Kids’ got good taste.

_013b

Really though, he just wants to bang on his drum all day.

We decided to venture outside. Oliver was a little quicker out the door than expected.

_017b

These are my favorite shots from the shoot. I won’t take credit though, all Matt’s idea…

Then we went for a walk…

And, ended the shoot on the same note we always end it…. on a meltdown. 🙂

Jessica & Caleb :: Mrs. & Mrs!!

Had so much fun at Jessica & Caleb’s wedding.  These are very sweet and genuine people, not to mention just really good looking. Also enjoyed getting out of Joplin to shoot this day in Neosho, Missouri at the Civic  & the Neosho United Methodist church.

Thanks to Lori Marble, Jessica’s wonderful stepmom who was the one to recommend me as a photographer to the couple. Wayyyyyyy back when I went to good ol’ Crowder College, Lori knew me… and she will forever refer to me as ‘sticky boy’… possibly my most ridiculous nickname to date. It was earned bc I was always putting up flyers on campus and the maintenance lady would often complain to Lori about all the tape I left on the doors (yep. that’s it).

Doesn’t matter if a nickname is cool or not… if it sticks, it *sticks*…. 🙂

Venturellas, Danners, & Bosley’s :: one of those magnificent megafamily shoots!

_001b

I’ve worked with most of these folks before, and was certainly excited about the opportunity to do it again. It didn’t dissapoint… I really, really love what we got from this colorful (that applies literally AND to the personalities involved) sunset-into-nighttime shoot.

I’ve known the Venturellas since little Roman was just a tiny guy. Christina was one of 9art’s first loyal clients…back when my work…kinda… well, it sucked. She and her husband DJ were some of the first to believe in me, and for that, I’ll be forever thankful. Since then, Roman has gotten huge and his little sister  Kendall is equally adorable. If you need an AWESOME hair stylist, look Christina up at ‘styles’ salon here in Joplin.

_013b

Aimee is Christina’s sister, and her lively bunch always keep me entertained. Her husband Tracy has an ornery sense of humor that is always very appreciated by me (even those moments when not 100%…appropriate…) and their 4 beautiful daughters have inherited quite a bit of that fun spark as well. The Danners were generous enough to open up their property for the shoot, where they have a pond, a lovely little forest, and several vintage cars sitting around which made for perfect settings. We kept with the ‘old car’ theme we had for our last shoot, back when we used a family member’s bright orange classic with an alley as our background.

_012b

and let’s not forget the Bosleys… the parents who started it all. They still got it! 🙂

Samantha + Josh:: husband & wife!

you might remember this couple from the engagement pictures a few weeks back. Now they’re all done married… a truly beautiful day with some fantastic natured people.

Yes, my wedding blog posts have gotten longer… I got a groovin’ new app that helps me bundle photos together quickly and I’m going a little crazy with it. Plus I can’t even begin to tell you how hard it is to narrow down an entire wedding day to a brief blog post.

Bear with me! 🙂

(possibly my favorite) »»>

so this post is so long I had to put a break in here somewhere. click for much more!

can’t even stand it.

when I saw these golf carts, I immediately knew what had to be done…

the top photo was so cute, I had to show it to the bride. The 2nd photo is her reaction.

I really do love grandparents w/ cameras at weddings. I need to make a separate little gallery just made up of all the hilarious pictures of ‘camera duels’ I’ve had with them at various weddings! Here’s my new favorite… only this time, thanks to facebook, I got the unexpected benefit of seeing HER picture of ME as well!

the fellow in the lower right corner cracks me up. Enjoying being able to escort not one, but TWO lovely ladies…

beautiful setting and perfect time of day! I love sunset weddings…

1st dance!!

had a few downtime moments to pull together a brief slideshow for the wedding party to see during the reception. Of course, I had to take a picture of them looking at the pictures…

this was the dance to see who’s been married the longest… there was a bit of confusion toward the end, however, with determining which of the final 3 couples had actually earned the title… it was a pretty close call!

And finally, I’m ending on a couple of photos featuring a little trick I’ve wanted to try for awhile… fun with sparklers! Thanks to Samantha for inspiring me to give it a try… what a great way to top off the day!

you can see just a hint of how this was done in the left photo below… our sparkler volunteer wasn’t quite fast enough to be invisible on this one!
