baby Emma, session #2

Don’t often do kids’ shoots in the studio, but it was perfect for miss Emma’s 2nd ‘baby’s first year’ shoot.  She was a SUPER good baby, so it went by really fast. Love those big blue eyes!

Chad tends to get a little goofy toward the end of the shoot…

…and he firmly established a picture ‘tradition’ started in their last session…. while Amanda maintains HER tradition of the ‘why do we have this tradition’ face.

And we’ll end on those aforementioned blue eyes. Til next time!

9art NEWS:: part 1

Hey there. How’s your summer going?

Sometimes, in the middle of all the craziness, it’s time to stop, slow down, and take stock. That’s what I’m doing over the next week and a half. And as I’m taking the time to do that, I want to fill you guys in on the latest… we have news that will make you cry, that will make you cheer, and that may just make you open up your e-mail window right now and drop us a line.

(that line could be angry, or it could be excited. I guess we’ll see).

This post will focus on what’s coming up. I only have one spot of bad news, so I’m going to pattern this post after the ‘compliment sandwich’ formula.

If you’re not sure what a compliment sandwich is, it’s ok.  Here’s a picture I took of someone making a sandwich.

#1:  Mini-session special!

We are running a BACK-TO-SCHOOL SPECIAL for week after next: there will be TWO DATES available for 9art mini sessions, featuring your favorite little (or even medium) one. Because let’s face it, school photos are lame. Real lame. We want you to do better than that…

  • 15 minute session
  • 2yr olds thru-16 yr olds
  • these will focus on individual portraits, but we’ll probably let you sneak a sibling or two in. Parents will not be included in   these sessions, however.
  • two windows to schedule a session:

THURSDAY, AUG 29, between 3pm & 8pm  ///  SATURDAY, AUG 31, between 8am & 5pm

  • sitting fee is just $20
  • better book your slot now… these may be gone in a hurry. 🙂

#2: *cough*nophotobooththismonth*cough

I realize this is an announcement we should’ve made sooner…. we are NOT participating in August third thursday.  Some of you have already known about this (especially those who have been attending long enough to know we generally DO take August off from 3TH), but for those who had no idea this was coming- and were really looking forward to it- I’m sorry.

Why? We need a break. 🙂 We need to recharge. August is our month to BREATHE before the madness of fall sets in; and especially since we haven’t had much of a chance to breathe just yet this month, it’s time for a little rest.

But guess what? We WILL be back, full force, in September. What’s the theme ? Well we won’t give any clues just yet, but you might get your capes ready… 😉

#3:  Special for full sessions announced next week!

For those of you thinking about booking full sessions for september & october…. it’s time to act soon.  That’s always our busiest time of year and now is the time we start filling the calendar. Think it over this week, then stay tuned for another special in that direction NEXT week.

More news coming up soon… but next time, more of what we’ve been up to, not what we’re planning next…

Route 66 ‘CARS’ themed photobooth: a special event

I’ve been dying to make this announcement for awhile, but locking in the final details prevented us from doing it til’ now. So here goes…

'cars' flyer

Lucky Joplin, MO gets to be host to the Route 66 international festival this week… and 9art was invited to be a part of it! One of the highlights of the event is the presence of the real life stars of Disney/Pixar’s film ‘Cars’… that’s right kids, Mater & Lightning McQueen will be HERE, in person, this weekend.

That’s where we come in. We are setting up a special photobooth where you can have your photo taken in front of the full size cars. We’re not talking a background… this is the REAL DEAL.

To cut back on confusion… I realize that yes, we are calling this a photobooth, and no, it is not a conventional photobooth. So yeah, that means it’s not really a booth. At all. 🙂 But to tell you the truth, our ‘photobooth’ has never been a conventional photobooth, but folks know what I’m talking about when I refer to it as such during third thursday and other events.

There are two separate times/places:

#1: carthage route 66 drive in. We will be set up there from 6:30- 8:30. a quick note there: you can only get in for this one if you’ve bought tickets already, as the event is very much sold out. But if you’re not already going to be there for that one, moving on to…

#2: downtown joplin. We (and the cars) will be set up at the intersection of 5th & main from 5pm to 7:30pm on Saturday evening (the third). There are no tickets or formal schedules involved for this photobooth, so just come on by anytime in that timeframe!

Special note::

we will be offering special discounted packages to those that order AT the event. We will be prepared to take pretty much any form of payment you throw at us (yes, including credit cards) so come prepared if you want to get the best deal. If you’d rather order later, no worries, we’ll still have prints available to order at our usual rates!

The festival itself:  Photos aside, the full festival event actually lasts for 3 days and is PACKED with stuff to do. Concerts, car shows, food, and plenty more. find out more about it on the main site:   route66internationalfestival.com

Tony + Kayla :: the big day

Tony & Kayla’s big day took place at the one and only Springhouse Gardens, Joplins’ premiere outdoor wedding venue. I’m no stranger to the venue, but I certainly don’t get tired of it…. it is simply beautiful.

And so are this couple… very, very sweet (and funny) people.

I first met Tony a few years ago, when he was a groomsman for a wedding I shot for Malachi & Angie. Always a groomsman, never a…

well, not anymore!

I LOVE my 105mm lens…lets me get some nifty close ups like this one…

a very serious man. Nothing helps a man look suave like a good cigar.

there’s malachi, over there on the left…

beautiful bride!

this is when we gave the LADIES the cigars…and told the men to act like ladies. I think Tony won.

Kayla is pretty much the coolest bride ever, in my books, for doing this…

the ceremony. perfect time of day. We’d had rain all week but were blessed with such a nice, perfect temperature, sunny day!

new ad campaign

Thanks to bluestream– a local company specializing in digital advertising in southwest missouri- 9art has recently has had the opportunity to put up some awesome local advertising. These ads are on flatscreen TV’s all around the area… 30+ screens in Joplin & Springfield, with locations including Oasis Salon & Day Spa, Harley Davidson Hideout, Hacketts’ Hot Wings, & Tropical Tan.

But my main thanks goes to two of the most talented guys I know- who also happen to be 2 of my best friends in the world- Lance Schaubert & Matt Spiel.

Matt, (coincidentally) is actually pictured in the first ad with his crying wife and child. He’s responsible for the design & layout of the ads, as well as having been the original designer of the 9art logo. 9art LOOKS cool because of Matt.

Lance, my partner in crime on Cold Brewed, gave me the words I was missing for these… he came up with some perfect tag lines to fit the general spirit of 9art. 9art SOUNDS cool because of Lance.

Here’s the campaign (in its’ natural environment…)

Kids are the REAL rock stars (Hunter, session 3)

image

Sometimes, I look at the style that has evolved out of my work, and it feels odd that I take pictures of…babies. I mean, I also take pictures of a lot of other very different things. Weddings, food, downtown scenery, bands & 1940s detectives…but it seems like babies would be the last subject on my list when it comes simply to analyzing the sometimes over-the-top epic shooting style that I tend to take on.

But why not? Babies & other children in general are much cooler than we are. They’re as honest as honest gets, pure, funny, and of course adorable… so why can’t I take pictures of them in the same way I’d take pictures of a band or a superhero or some other more seemingly ‘epic’ subject?

That being said, I start with the simple shots… the ones that focus on the expressions & chubby cheeks, quiet moments that are captured in a more classic and timeless way. Sometimes, if you add too much ‘style’ to a picture, it takes away from the subject.

image

image

But after that… I like to break out the off-camera-flash, the wide angle lens, and lay on the ground or climb a tree for dramatic angles, to capture kids in a stylized and quirky way. It’s fun feeling to see my work take on a unique look. And even more fun plugging that into a genre of family photography that isn’t always approached in a very fresh light.

image

If that came across as egotistical… shoot me.

(And not with a camera).

Enough rambling. Here’s more of the real stars of the show… baby Hunter & big brother Parker. these are some ridiculously cute children. And my camera has NOTHING to do with that fact.

Bethany + Josh:: MARRIED!

I’m starting this post with a little flashback to 2009, when I first began working with the Barringer family. Here’s a shot from Sarah & Doug’s wedding, from all the way back then…

image

Now, it’s her sister Bethany’s turn…

image

I’ve known Bethany for a good long time… all the way back to my good ol barista days, when we worked together at Starbucks. She’s made guest appearances at quite a few weddings I’ve shot, and it’s so awesome to finally be able to be there for HER big day.

Bethany is such a fun spirit, and has found her perfect match in the hilarious Josh Huskey, a man whose goofiness is almost an art form in itself. I’ve been looking forward so much to shooting this wedding because of how much fun I knew it would be… and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Hope you enjoy these.

Shot #1: I passed by an open window where the groomsmen were getting ready and told them all to crowd in.

image

You’ve got to watch those reflections. you see me?

image

image

I know the neighbor across the street from the church will probably never see these images, but on the off chance he does, forever thanks for letting us hang out on your property for pictures.

the fun socks tie in nicely for me…I often got in trouble for wearing ridiculous socks that weren’t ‘dress code’ back when I worked with Bethany…

(now I wear outrageous socks to every wedding I shoot).

snagged some solo shots of the groom while he was waiting to see the bride for the first time.

oh the SUSPENSE!

but seriously, he was pretty nervous.

I was so happy to see such creativity with the bouquet. First time I’ve shot cloth flowers on a wedding day.

Someone commented that they wondered what I told the wedding party to get these expressions. I don’t remember. But does it matter?

Time for the fellas to have some fun….certainly wasn’t hard to get them to pose a bit.

image

image

yeah. that was weird. But when a group such as this finds a random deer head hanging from a tree… well…

the girls were much more reserved.

ok, not really.

There’s so much more from this big day, but I don’t want to absolutely overwhelm the blog. So if you’d like to see more, head to our facebook page, where we’ll be posting an extended preview album soon!

PHOTOBOOTH:: best of 2012

As many of you know, I run a photo booth each month at downtown Joplin’s ‘third thursday’ events. Last year, after running the booth for 2 years previously, we got to see the event grown in a huge way. Attendance increased exponentially, to the point that our modest little upstairs studio could no longer handle the traffic.

We moved the photo booth to a borrowed space on the main strip and watched lines reach out the doors. Tomorrow evening, we begin a new season of photoboothing with our ‘rock stars’ theme. To celebrate, here’s some of our favorite images from last year…

and I’ve including the reasons we love doing this.

because our regulars are never lacking enthusiasm.

image

because it’s a full family affair for many of you.

image

BC you were inventive in your ideas.

image

Because I came away with images I never could have expected.

image

Because I got to interact with my clients from my “other” areas of my work in a new context. (pictured are Beth & Nick, whose wedding I shot this January, & Caleb, who is the star of the new series ‘Cold Brewed’).

image

Because some people really got into it.

image

Because folks didn’t even have to be born yet to get the picture.

image

Because you all learned to be caricatures of yourselves.

image

Because you people are just so damn classy.

image

Because this picture is real weird.

image

Because I got to see this family have the honor of officially adopting Mr. Truman. Before last year, we could not legally show Truman’s face. It was a huge victory to be able to include him in the galleries… a reminder of this family becoming complete.

image

Because things got epic.

image

Because some folks just really looked the part.

image

And some people happily participated, even when they really didn’t look the part.

image

Because of the great zombie war.

image

Because ms. Ashley Carter always led the pack when it came to fantastic expressions.

image

Because good friends of mine made a point to come.

image

Because the running of the bulls came to the studio.

image

Because an entire high school show choir led the crowd standing in line, in a rousing chorus of ‘We Are Young’.

image

Because sometimes, the only prop needed was just a table.

image

Because sometimes, my clients referenced themselves….
image

Because we took photos that looked like weird album covers.

image

Because I got to get my old boss from starbucks wear this ridiculous outfit.

image

Because the cool kids came.

image

Because so many of you were such faithful attenders. Weird, faithful attenders.

image

Because w/out the help of the DJA (downtown Joplin Alliance), this thing wouldn’t exist.

image

Because there was so much flippin’ cuteness.

image

image

Because great acting was had.

image

Because, the photo booth became something epic. Thank you all. Here’s to another round in 2013!

Caegan: SESSION 3

Another baby turned toddler; I’ve seen mr. Caegan go from newborn to very expressive, bouncy little man. take in the CUTENESS!

This is actually the note we started on. Caegan had just woken up and I was a little too close a little too fast…

he warmed up fast.

this is the expression of an unimpressed toddler. take that, perfect family picture. (he had many such expressions).

sometimes I have to turn around to snap a picture of what the parent is doing to get the kiddo to smile…

It’s a good thing nobody is there to turn the camera on ME, bc I’m generally doing some pretty ridiculous things when I’m taking pictures of toddlers.

Jessica + Caleb

I took pictures for Jessica’s family a few years ago, and can’t believe that I’m now working out plans to shoot her wedding. It was great to meet her fiancee Caleb, especially when I discovered he is a fellow ‘Batman’ fan and brought the shirt to prove it.

    So I ran with that….

So yeah, the rest of the session is more romantic than superhero themed… but you know…batman can be romantic too.

Can’t wait to work with Jessica and Caleb again for their wedding and July!
