Katie & Caleb

Meet Katie & Caleb. I do few weddings these days, and I’m so very glad that these two were one of the sweet couples I got to capture a day for.

Surrounded by so many friends, the Boydstons are obviously very loved, and for good reason. Hope you enjoy walking through the day via a slice of time here and there…

Venturellas, Danners, & Bosley’s :: one of those magnificent megafamily shoots!

I’ve worked with most of these folks before, and was certainly excited about the opportunity to do it again. It didn’t dissapoint… I really, really love what we got from this colorful (that applies literally AND to the personalities involved) sunset-into-nighttime shoot.

I’ve known the Venturellas since little Roman was just a tiny guy. Christina was one of 9art’s first loyal clients…back when my work…kinda… well, it sucked. She and her husband DJ were some of the first to believe in me, and for that, I’ll be forever thankful. Since then, Roman has gotten huge and his little sister  Kendall is equally adorable. If you need an AWESOME hair stylist, look Christina up at ‘styles’ salon here in Joplin.

Aimee is Christina’s sister, and her lively bunch always keep me entertained. Her husband Tracy has an ornery sense of humor that is always very appreciated by me (even those moments when not 100%…appropriate…) and their 4 beautiful daughters have inherited quite a bit of that fun spark as well. The Danners were generous enough to open up their property for the shoot, where they have a pond, a lovely little forest, and several vintage cars sitting around which made for perfect settings. We kept with the ‘old car’ theme we had for our last shoot, back when we used a family member’s bright orange classic with an alley as our background.

and let’s not forget the Bosleys… the parents who started it all. They still got it! 🙂

the rest of the post is just a few of my favorites from working with the individuals as well as the whole group.

Kids are the REAL rock stars (Hunter, session 3)

image

    Sometimes, I look at the style that has evolved out of my work, and it feels odd that I take pictures of…babies. I mean, I also take pictures of a lot of other very different things. Weddings, food, downtown scenery, bands & 1940s detectives…but it seems like babies would be the last subject on my list when it comes simply to analyzing the sometimes over-the-top epic shooting style that I tend to take on.

     But why not? Babies & other children in general are much cooler than we are. They’re as honest as honest gets, pure, funny, and of course adorable… so why can’t I take pictures of them in the same way I’d take pictures of a band or a superhero or some other more seemingly ‘epic’ subject?

That being said, I start with the simple shots… the ones that focus on the expressions & chubby cheeks, quiet moments that are captured in a more classic and timeless way. Sometimes, if you add too much ‘style’ to a picture, it takes away from the subject.

But after that… I like to break out the off-camera-flash, the wide angle lens, and lay on the ground or climb a tree for dramatic angles, to capture kids in a stylized and quirky way. It’s fun feeling to see my work take on a unique look. And even more fun plugging that into a genre of family photography that isn’t always approached in a very fresh light.

image

If that came across as egotistical… shoot me.

(And not with a camera).

Enough rambling. Here’s more of the real stars of the show… baby Hunter & big brother Parker. these are some ridiculously cute children. And my camera has NOTHING to do with that fact.

Samantha + Josh:: husband & wife!

    you might remember this couple from the engagement pictures a few weeks back. Now they’re all done married… a truly beautiful day with some fantastic natured people.

    Yes, my wedding blog posts have gotten longer… I got a groovin’ new app that helps me bundle photos together quickly and I’m going a little crazy with it. Plus I can’t even begin to tell you how hard it is to narrow down an entire wedding day to a brief blog post.

Bear with me! 🙂

(possibly my favorite) »»>

so this post is so long I had to put a break in here somewhere. click for much more!

can’t even stand it.

when I saw these golf carts, I immediately knew what had to be done…

the top photo was so cute, I had to show it to the bride. The 2nd photo is her reaction.

I really do love grandparents w/ cameras at weddings. I need to make a separate little gallery just made up of all the hilarious pictures of ‘camera duels’ I’ve had with them at various weddings! Here’s my new favorite… only this time, thanks to facebook, I got the unexpected benefit of seeing HER picture of ME as well!

the fellow in the lower right corner cracks me up. Enjoying being able to escort not one, but TWO lovely ladies…

beautiful setting and perfect time of day! I love sunset weddings…

1st dance!!

had a few downtime moments to pull together a brief slideshow for the wedding party to see during the reception. Of course, I had to take a picture of them looking at the pictures…

this was the dance to see who’s been married the longest… there was a bit of confusion toward the end, however, with determining which of the final 3 couples had actually earned the title… it was a pretty close call!

And finally, I’m ending on a couple of photos featuring a little trick I’ve wanted to try for awhile… fun with sparklers! Thanks to Samantha for inspiring me to give it a try… what a great way to top off the day!

you can see just a hint of how this was done in the left photo below… our sparkler volunteer wasn’t quite fast enough to be invisible on this one!

baby Eleanor ::: session 2

     The baby’s 1st year plan is just a heck of a lot of fun. Having 2 tiny kiddos of my own, I know how fast they grow right in front of me… but with clients participating in the plan, it’s almost like I’m meeting a new baby every time I come back for a session.

     Eleanor is sitting up, crawling, and showing off her new teeth. She has an awesome nursery and it was pretty stinking hot outside, so we hung out in her room for the majority of the shoot. Those 100+ degree days sure will inspire you to be more creative indoors…. 🙂

st patty’s day ::: PHOTOBOOTH!

    Joplin art walks are back! St Patrick’s day coincided with the first third thursday of the season, here in downtown joplin missouri. This made for an obvious theme for the photobooth, continued from last year’s third thursdays. Though this is the first time I actually called it a photooboth. 🙂

     The evening set an amazing tone for the rest of the year… outstanding turnout in the studio, great weather, some very fun pictures. Here’s a preview, with many more to be released on the facebook page next week.

(PS. We have no idea how the gnome got in here.)

Liburna & Burim

     Liburna & Burim are not your average Missourians. These very kind folks are actually from Europe, and since they’d never had professional photos taken as a couple, wanted some portraits with personality to represent them as a married couple (they tied the knot two years ago).

 I get very excited when people choose to have their portrait taken as a couple, not just out of tradition or because they are getting married, but simply to celebrate their relationship. I hope to work with many more couples in the coming years with the same idea and the same happiness & passion that Liburna & Burim have for each-other!

Venturellas:: in the studio!

     I’m still getting used to shooting in an actual, for real studio. It’s not easy.

     Many photographers start with a studio and don’t know how to work with ambient light once they step out of it. I am the exact reverse.

I have shot weddings, seniors, babies, families, maternity, creepy dolls, corporate group pictures, t- shirt models, cars, college professors, weather, movie-set production photos and cows without setting foot in a studio. I’ve actually worked ‘on location’ for so long now, that getting a studio scared me. Suddenly I go from having my pick of backgrounds, and as much space as I want to move around in and light from- to having an enclosed space; one background, comprised of a roll of white paper, and no natural light. To a photographer who has worked in hundreds of different situations each involving completely different light, a studio is TERRIFYING.

     This shoot, with my very faithful clients the Venturellas, marks me stepping out of that fear and beginning to feel in my element here in the studio setting. I still have so much to learn and a whole lot of experimenting to do as I take some time to admire those that have ‘conquered’ studio lighting (aka my photo-man-crush zack arias). But in the meanwhile, here are some shots, in the new studio I am thankful to have, that I am pretty proud of.

     Thanks to the Venturellas for being patient with me as I fiddled with my flash & tried a few things as we went… and a pre-emptive congrats on the new baby girl that the little family will be enjoying next year. And thanks to you readers for being patient with me as a rambled at you for awhile.

     I’m starting this off with some of my favorites, as usual from the unplanned shots… little Roman kept finding a way to sneak into the photo, whether he was supposed to be in it or not. 🙂

I’m also excited to have snuck my outrageous 70s salon chair into the shoot… as Christina is an (awesome) hairdresser, I told her she might be the only client for whom the chair would be fitting.

NEW BLOG!

Well guys… after a lovely 2-year run on WordPress, it’s time to find the blog a new home. No offense wordpress, but we’ve moved to tumblr so we can use a sleek new template with more color and BIGGER pictures! It ties in much better to our main site as well. So this is the last post here… from now on, visit:

Be sure to click ‘follow’ on tumblr if you want to see each update as it becomes available!

John & Christina

     Yep. Same guy…. different weddings. I love when I get weddings from the referrals of pre-existing clients, because it means I start running into the same people. Such was the case with the colorful character you see here, who has now challenged me to a camera duel not once but twice this year. (hard to say who won. You would have to have been there).

       Now meet the folks for whom this day was really about… John and Christina. This very sweet couple tied the knot right here in Joplin on Friday, and I’m so honored to have been there for it. Congratulations to the mr & mrs!!
